Beginning in the 1920’s John Attwooll ran a successful animal medicine business, until 1936 when he took over A E Drew of Ross-on-Wye who hired out marquees. The company began expanding though Gloucestershire, moving to Whitminster in 1942. At the outbreak of the Second World in 1939, the government requisitioned the company’s tents and marquees to support the NAFI. John’s son Peter took over the firm, eventually branching out into leisure products, protective awnings for boats and lorries; they even contributed to the wings of the European Airbus during construction. It was really in the 1960’s when the retail department was formed, when tents were erected in a wooden shed at Whitminster for customers to inspect and purchase.
From humble beginnings the Camping business has grown, to the point where it is based in a 36,000sq ft showroom dedicated to the demonstration of tents, alongside a huge range of camping equipment and leisure products, including a ski department in the winter months, and enhanced with a homely coffee shop.
The company is proud of over 90 years of trading and today the business is still a family run affair with Peter’s children and grand children, the 4th generation, still very much involved in the business. Expanding year on year, Attwoolls is a proud family-run business, with interests in camping and leisure, manufacturing and marquee hire, all run from its conveniently situated 12 acre site.
